What's Actually Inside a BrightKidFun Crafts Kit? (A Behind-the-Scenes Peek)

← Back to all posts

The question we get asked the most

"What's actually in the kit?"

Fair question. When you're buying a craft kit online — especially for your kid, or twenty kids if you're a teacher — you want to know exactly what you're getting. Not just a pretty listing photo. Not just a vague description. The actual, physical, hold-in-your-hands contents.

So today I'm pulling back the curtain. I'm going to walk you through what goes into designing, sourcing, and hand-assembling a BrightKidFun Crafts kit — using our best-selling Fairy Garden DIY Kit ($29.75) as the star example. And then I'll peek inside a few other favorites too.

The Fairy Garden DIY Kit: a full inventory

Let's open one up. Here's everything inside:

That's not a "kit." That's a full experience in a box. And every single piece is sourced, tested, and assembled by hand right here in Katy, Texas.

How a kit gets designed

Every kit starts with a question: "What would a kid actually want to build?" Not what looks good on Instagram (although our kits do look great on Instagram, I won't pretend otherwise). What makes a child sit down, focus, and feel proud of what they made.

The Fairy Garden came from watching my own kids play. They'd arrange rocks and sticks in the backyard, calling it a "fairy house." I thought: what if I could bottle that impulse — the world-building, the tiny details, the careful arrangement — and turn it into something repeatable, giftable, and mess-controlled?

That same design philosophy runs through every kit in the line. The DIY Dinosaur Terrarium ($17) came from the same impulse — kids who love dinosaurs don't just want to hold a plastic T-Rex. They want to build a world for it. So we give them rocks, moss, soil, and dinosaur figures, and they create a prehistoric landscape that's entirely their own.

The sourcing story

I'm picky about materials. Annoyingly picky, if you ask my supplier contacts. Here's why:

Kids touch everything. They hold things close to their faces. They sometimes taste things (we all wish they wouldn't, but here we are). So every material in a BrightKidFun Crafts kit has to pass a simple test: would I hand this to my own child without a second thought?

The moss in our garden kits is preserved and non-toxic. The figurines are lead-free and hand-painted. The pebbles are smooth — no sharp edges, no crumbling. The paints in kits like the DIY Hello Spring Wreath Paint Kit ($17) are non-toxic acrylics with brushes sized for kid hands.

I test every component myself before it goes into production. Not a sample — every batch. If the moss is too dry, it gets replaced. If a figurine's paint chips too easily, I find a better supplier. There's no quality control department here. It's just me, at a table, checking things.

The assembly process (it's all by hand)

There's no factory. There's no assembly line with conveyor belts. There's a studio in Katy, Texas, and there's me — Tanu — hand-packing every kit.

Here's what that looks like for the DIY Unicorn Snow Globe Kit ($23.80):

  1. The globe, base, and seal components are checked for cracks or defects.
  2. The unicorn figurine is inspected — paint intact, no loose parts.
  3. Glitter is pre-portioned into a small sealed bag (because dumping a full glitter bottle into a snow globe is a mistake you only make once).
  4. Glycerin, adhesive, and decorative elements are packaged separately with clear labels.
  5. An instruction card with step-by-step visuals goes in.
  6. A personalized name tag is handwritten and tucked inside.
  7. Everything goes into branded packaging, sealed, labeled, and ready to ship.

That process takes about 8-10 minutes per kit. Multiply that by a batch of 50, and you get a very long afternoon. But the alternative — mass production from a warehouse — means losing the quality checks, the personal touches, and the handwritten tags that make each kit feel like it was made for one specific kid. Because it was.

Inside a few more favorites

DIY Mermaid Snow Globe ($23.80)

The DIY Mermaid Snow Globe Kit follows the same blueprint as the unicorn version but with an under-the-sea twist — a mermaid figurine, ocean-blue glitter, and iridescent flakes that catch the light like sunlight through water. Same attention to detail, different magical world.

DIY Dinosaur Terrarium ($17)

The Dinosaur Terrarium includes a container, preserved moss, decorative rocks, soil, and miniature dinosaur figures. The rocks are smooth river stones — tactile, heavy enough to feel "real," and perfect for building tiny prehistoric landscapes. Every terrarium ends up looking different, because every kid's version of "the Jurassic period" is delightfully unique.

Mermaid DIY Kit ($17)

The Mermaid DIY Kit is a miniature fairy garden reimagined as an underwater scene — shells, a mermaid figure, colored sand, and ocean-themed accessories. It's the fairy garden's coastal cousin, and it's wildly popular for mermaid-themed birthday parties.

The name tag thing: Every kit ships with a handwritten personalized tag. I write each one myself. Is it efficient? No. Could I print labels? Sure. But there's something about a kid seeing their name written by a real person on a thing made just for them. It's a small detail, but small details are sort of our whole thing.

Why this matters

You could buy a bag of craft supplies from a big box store. You could gather your own moss and rocks and figurines. You absolutely could. But what you'd be buying is time — yours — plus the mental load of figuring out what goes together, what's safe, what's the right amount, and how to make it all fit in a way that a kid can actually follow.

That's what a BrightKidFun Crafts kit really is. It's not just materials. It's the thinking, testing, sourcing, and assembling already done for you — by someone who cares about it as much as you do.
